Amy (Edwards) Carter

January 5, 1912 — May 17, 2011

Amy Carter, age 99 years, 4 months, and 12 days, went home to be with her Lord on May 17, 2011. She was born on the family farm near Mountain Grove to H.T. and Stella (Dennis) Edwards on January 5, 1912.
Amy, along with her brother and sisters, attended the Fairview and Blanchard Schools. While attending the Blanchard School, the Edwards children walked several miles to school each day with their neighbors, the Carter children. After completing her schooling, Amy continued walking her little sister, Ione, to school each day and volunteered as a teacher’s assistant at the Blanchard School.
In December of 1930, Amy and the young man at the neighboring farm started going to church activities together. This began a courtship which led to her marriage to James Earl Carter on March 13, 1932. This union was blessed with two sons and a daughter.
Amy joined the Oak Grove Free Will Baptist Church when she was 11 years old. She loved working with children. She taught Sunday School for many years, served as church clerk for over 32 years, and helped with Vacation Bible School until she was in her early nineties. Amy served faithfully as a deacon’s wife from the day Earl was ordained in 1941.
Amy and Earl worked side by side on their farm and enjoyed nearly 48 years together before Earl passed away January 4, 1980. Amy continued to enjoy gardening, cooking and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents, four sisters, and a brother, Amy was preceded in death by her husband, Earl; an infant son, Denzel; and son-in-law Bob Chasteen.
She is survived by her son, Basil Carter and his wife Jane, and a daughter, Gloriabell Chasteen; six grandchildren: Steve Carter and wife Terrye, Dan Carter, Teresa Chasteen Calhoun and husband Gary, Tim Carter, Terry Hutsell, and Lisa Messer; eight great grandchildren: John Carter and wife Ashley, Joel Carter, Jordan Carter, Ashley Otwell Short and husband Scott, Bobby Otwell, Carter Otwell, Brianne Calhoun and Garrett Calhoun; and two great great grandchildren: Trystan and Macenzie Short; and many other relatives, friends, and church family who will miss her dearly.
