Burley G. Cantrell

March 17, 1917 — August 21, 2008

Burley G. Cantrell, son of the late James Jasper and Leota Adeline “Addie” (Kelley) Cantrell, was born on March 17, 1917 in Astoria, Missouri in Texas County and passed away on Thursday, August 21, 2008 in the Kabul Nursing Home in Cabool, Missouri, following a long illness. He was 91 years, 5 months and 4 days of age.
Burley grew up and attended school in the Astoria Community in Texas County. He was united in marriage to Opal Veneta Tate on October 28, 1939 in Hartville, Missouri. Four daughters were born to this union. Opal passed away on January 22, 2008.
Burley was a beef and dairy farmer most all his life. He enjoyed being outdoors tending to his farm chores and hunting turkey, deer, fox, coon, quail and coyotes.
In his youth and during his young adult life he enjoyed playing baseball. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan and liked watching and listening to the games whenever possible. Burley attended the Southside Baptist Church in Mtn. Grove and had recently accepted the Lord as his Savior.
He was a loving and kind husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather and friend. He truly enjoyed the time he spent with his family and visiting with his friends. He cared for Opal during her illness as long as possible and continued to stay by her side while she was in the nursing home.
Besides his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter: Sharon Kay Cantrell; three brothers: Oscar, Claude, and Donald Cantrell; and by one sister: Winnie Gaddis.
He is survived by his three daughters: Eula Shobe of Springfield, Missouri, Joyce White and her husband, Gayle, of Mtn. Grove and Phyllis Melton of Houston, Missouri; seven grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends who will miss him very much.
Funeral services of Burley Cantrell were held Saturday, August 23, 1:00 PM in the Craig-Hurtt Chapel with Rev. Bythel Friend officiating. Jared Moore, accompanied by Rhonda Hurtt sang “Beulah Land,” “Amazing Grace,” and “My Chains Are Gone.” Pallbearers were Dallas McColgin, Tim Jackson, Stanley Shobe, Zachary Hollingshad, Ethan Hollingshad and Duncan Smith. Burial was in the Rock Springs Cemetery under the direction of the Craig-Hurtt Funeral Home, Mtn. Grove, Missouri.

Saturday, August 23, 2008 at 1:00 PM in the Craig-Hurtt Chapel in Mtn. Grove, Missouri.
Visitation:
Friday, August 22, 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM in the funeral home.
