Clifford Roland Hoffman

October 29, 1921 — April 24, 2013

Clifford Rolland Hoffman, youngest son of Frederick and Johannah (Sengelman) Hoffman, was born October 29, 1921 in Battle Creek, Iowa and departed this life April 24, 2013 in Mercy Hospital in Springfield, Missouri.

Clifford shared many stories from his childhood growing up on farms in Iowa before moving to Mountain Grove in 1937. Life was hard working the land with horses, struggling through the dust bowl and Great Depression, but he learned the family values and personal rewards that come from honest work. Clifford’s integrity and strong work ethic brought him countless good friends throughout his life.

After graduating from Mountain Grove High School in 1940 Clifford worked in Sterling, IL for two years where he met his future bride Genevieve Boyungs. He willingly answered the call to duty and served as Motor Sargent in the US Army during World War II. He and his 104th Infantry Division “Timberwolves” fought their way across northern Europe and ended their campaign in Halle, Germany.

Soon after his discharge Clifford returned to his family and the girl waiting for him back home. Clifford and Genevieve were married in Sterling on October 26, 1946 and settled in Mountain Grove where he worked as a machinist and field mechanic for the Missouri Department of Transportation. Their devotion to each other spanned 63 years as they raised two children and watched their grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow up.

Clifford was always there to support his family through sports and school activities. He was one of those favorite uncles that took the young children for outings whenever there was a big family gathering. In recent years he was able to watch his grandchildren and even great grandchildren grow to maturity and participate in their active lives. Clifford was a wonderful man, loyal citizen and trusted friend to those in his community. He will be missed by so many who loved him dearly.

Clifford was preceded in death by his brother Henry Hoffman and sister Eunice Ferris of Mountain Grove and sisters Ruth Bahney of Sioux City, IA and Ferne Baker of Steeleville, MO. He is survived by his brother Glenn Hoffman of Sterling, IL, son David and wife Mary of Pensacola, FL and daughter Carol Dawson and husband Dallas of Mountain Grove. He leaves four grandchildren; Valerie Wylie of Hartville, MO, Hannah Dawson-Gaither of Bolivar, MO, Andrew Hoffman of Asheville, NC and Robert Hoffman of St Petersburg, FL. Clifford was also loved by his eight great-grandchildren who called him their “Grandpa Great.”
