Delmar Leroy Matthews

January 24, 1943 — September 14, 2009

Delmar LeRoy Matthews, son of the late Buell Delmar and Marjorie Helen (Oppermann) Matthews, was born on January 24, 1943 in Vienna, Missouri, and departed this life on Monday, September 14, 2009 in the Veterans Medical Center in Little Rock, Arkansas following a short illness. He was 66 years, 7 months and 20 days of age.
Delmar grew up and attended school in Vienna, Missouri and graduated from Vienna High School in 1961. He served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and Marksman (Rifle M-14). He was honorably discharged on September 16, 1966 as a SP4. r Following his return home, he worked in factories and later in life he done custodial work in hospitals and schools.
Delmar was united in marriage to Marla Jean Harris February 21, 1975 in Newburg, Missouri.
He enjoyed being outdoors, especially when fishing, camping, doing yard work and gardening. He also enjoyed going to stock car races whenever possible.
Delmar liked to travel and last month he took a two week trip with his son in a truck, which they both enjoyed very much.
He attended the Mtn. Grove Assembly of God Church before moving to Arkansas. At the time of his passing, he was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Forrest City, Arkansas.
He is survived by his wife: Marla Jean Matthews of their home in Palestine, Arkansas; one son: Johnny LeRoy Matthews of Pine Bluff, Arkansas; one sister: Helen Terry and her husband, Donald, of Vienna, Missouri; six grandchildren; two nieces; one great-nephew; one great-niece; and a host of other relatives, neighbors and friends who will truly miss him.


Funeral Services:
Friday, September 18, 2009 at 2:00 PM in the Assembly of God Church in Mtn. Grove.
Visitation:
No Formal - Friends may call after noon on Thursday, September 17th in the funeral home.
Burial:
Hillcrest Cemetery
Donations/Contributions:
American Cancer Society c/o the funeral home.
