Don Mayfield

August 2, 1923 — November 9, 2019

James Don Mayfield, son of the late Andy and Zady (Hurtt) Mayfield, was born August 2, 1923, in Mountain Grove, Missouri. He departed this life peacefully surrounded by family on November 9, 2019, at the age of 96.

Don grew up and attended school in the Mountain Grove area. After spending some time in California, he enlisted and served in the United States Coast Guard from February of 1943 until April of 1946.

On November 29, 1947, Don was united in marriage to the love of his life, May Adele Lawson. Three daughters were born to this union: Donna, Vonna, and Aleta.

Don enjoyed the outdoors, fishing and hunting. He took any opportunity he had to go coyote hunting. He also loved spending time with his brothers and sister. During their retirement years, Don and May Adele loved to spend time at the lake while camping with family and friends. Some of Don’s favorite pastimes included watching NASCAR racing and WWE wrestling with his great-grandkids. Throughout the past several years, Don enjoyed taking his morning walks and sitting on the porch with his wife while they enjoyed visits from family and friends. He was always present at family functions and loved to support his grandchildren and great-grandchildren at their school and sports functions.

Don was a lifetime member of the Carpenters Union of Kansas City. He was valued for his expertise in carpentry and always eager to help friends and family when they needed something built.

Don was saved and baptized as a young child. In August of 2015, he rededicated his life on his front porch. After that day, as long as his health permitted, he attended Willow Springs Free Will Baptist Church.

Besides his parents, Don was preceded in death by his loving wife of almost 68 years, May Adele, one son-in-law, Lynn Day, three sisters, Louise Rouse, Betty and Ruthlane Mayfield, five brothers, Hobart Lee, Bill, Lewis, Wilbur, and Ben Mayfield.

He is survived by his daughters, Donna Davis and her husband, Vince, Vonna Day, and Aleta Pamperien and her husband, Randy, all of Mountain Grove, Missouri, five grandchildren, Jamie, Marty, Wes, Ashley, and Kayla, fourteen great-grandchildren, Trevr, Paige, Laura, Michael, Cody, Justin, Preston, Audrey, Taylor, Bella, Brody, Kolton, Kason, and Kalli, one brother, Bud Mayfield of Thornfield, Missouri, two sisters-in-law, Eva Mayfield and Joy Mayfield, and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Jim and Dona Lawson all of Mountain Grove, and many other relatives and friends who will greatly miss him.
