Ethel Pauline (Sumner) Turgon

September 17, 1916 — February 18, 2013

Ethel Pauline (Sumner) Turgon passed away at the age of ninety-six, at the home of her daughter in Grimesland, North Carolina on Monday, February 18, 2013.
Pauline was born on September 17, 1916 in Norwood, Missouri to Claud Sherman and Effie Mae (Martin) Sumner. Before Pauline’s first birthday, the family moved to South Dakota, and lived there for twelve years before moving back to Norwood. She graduated from Norwood High School in 1934 and then obtained her teaching certificate from Southwest Missouri State Teachers’ College (Missouri State University). She taught third and fourth grades at Norwood Elementary School until her marriage to Henry Alfred “Lewis” Turgon, also of Norwood. They were married in Ava, Missouri on May 11, 1940. They moved to Altamont, Kansas, where their daughter and only child, Janet Sue, was born on October 25, 1941. In 1942 they moved to Coffeyville, Kansas, and then they retired to Mtn. Grove, Missouri in 1985 to be close to family. In 2010, Pauline moved to Grimesland, North Carolina, to live with her daughter and son-in-law.
Pauline was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis, of sixty-years, who died on March 27, 2001; her parents: Claud and Effie Sumner; and by one sister: Marjorie Helen Davies Schlesinger of Pasadena, California.
She is survived by her daughter; Janet Sue (Turgon) Pennington and her husband, Dr. Sam N. Pennington of Grimesland, North Carolina; two granddaughters: Traci Anne (Pennington) Gurung and her husband, Naresh Kaji “Mike” Gurung of St. Paul Park, Minnesota, and Susan Jenean Pennington of Olathe, Kansas; two great-granddaughters: Anna Laxmi and Grace Devi Gurung; three sisters: Opal Irene Chadwell of Norwood, Missouri, Maxine S. Jackson of Fresno, California, and Evelyn May Wright and her husband, James, of Mtn. Grove, Missouri; one sister-in-law: Joan (Turgon) Fletcher of Billings, Missouri; and many nieces and nephews.
Pauline was a member of the Dearing Christian Church in Dearing, Kansas, until her move to Mtn. Grove, where she became a member of the Mtn. Grove First Christian Church. When she moved to Grimesland, she became a member of the First Christian Church in Greenville, North Carolina. Pauline taught Sunday School for many years in Dearing and Mtn. Grove.
Pauline always liked to watch the sunset and her comment would be, “If a sunset is that beautiful, just think how glorious Heaven must be.”
