Garner J. Monson

Garner John Monson, son of the late John Martin and Ruth Helen (Battey) Monson, was born on May 1, 1923 in Herford, South Dakota, and departed this life on January 21, 2007 at his residence in Mtn. Grove, Missouri, following a short illness. He was 83 years, 8 months, and 20 days of age.
Garner grew up in South Dakota and was united in marriage to Ruth Helen Heath on March 18, 1945 in Sturgis, South Dakota. Six children were born to this union. They moved from Rapid City, South Dakota to the Mtn. Grove area in the spring of 1969, where they made their home for many years. Ruth passed away on August 15, 2000.
Garner later married May Luceal French on October 14, 2001 in Mtn. Grove. He enjoyed painting and gardening. He was employed by Wal-Mart Super Center in Mtn. Grove as a door greeter for several years. He was known for his friendly smile and a heart of giving to others and those in need.
He was a long time member of the Church of God in Mtn. Grove, Missouri.
Garner was a loving and caring husband, father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather, friend and neighbor. He will be truly missed by those who knew and loved him.
Besides his parents and his first wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers: Earl and Arthur Monson; and by one sister: Gladys Miles.
He is survived by his loving wife: May Luceal Monson of their home; one son, Alvin Monson and his wife, Debra of Minneapolis, Minnesota; five daughters: Janice Swift of Orlando, Florida, Connie Hooper and her husband, Jerry of Roanoke, Virginia, LaVonne Beyerle and her husband, Lyle of Minot, North Dakota, Marilyn Landreth of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Sheila Talbott and her husband, Tony of Richmond, Virginia; one brother: Wayne Monson and his wife, Judy of Winona, Texas; one sister, Velda Hays and her husband, Bob of Dadeville, Alabama; seventeen grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Community Hospice and friends in the community for their loving support.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, January 24, 2:00 p.m. in the Craig-Hurtt Chapel with Rev. Bob Williams officiating. Jared Moore, accompanied by Rhonda Hurtt, sang “Blessed Assurance,” “When We All Get To Heaven,” and “When The Roll Is Called Up Yonder.” Pallbearers were James Hooper, J.C. Cain, Paul Dodson, and Shelley Sharkey. Burial was in the Hillcrest Cemetery under the direction of the Craig-Hurtt Funeral Home, Mtn. Grove, MO.
