Gladys Geraldine "Jerry" Sumpter

December 11, 1931 — April 3, 2022

Gladys Geraldine “Jerry” Sumpter, daughter of the late Carl and Martha (Hardesty) Mann, was born the fourth of five children on December 11, 1931, in Perry County, Indiana, and passed away April 3, 2022, at The Cottage at Woodland Hills in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She was 90 years, 3 months, and 23 days of age.

Jerry was baptized at an early age in the creek near her childhood home. She had many memories of running around the countryside with her little brother, Donny. She left home at a young age and became a nanny, where she met her husband, Richard, of 62 years, in Louisville, Kentucky. They married in Morganfield, Kentucky, on November 3, 1948, and remained together until his passing in 2011. One child was born to this union, Cindy.

Jerry and Richard had many years of adventure traveling all over the states during his military career, including three years in Alaska and on to Germany for their last tour. Upon his retirement, they chose Mountain Grove as their home. Jerry worked very hard by his side all the years they were there raising cows and pigs and having an acre garden. They raised more than they could can and eat and shared the rest with the neighbors.

Jerry also worked as a “lunch lady” in the Mountain Grove Elementary school for 25 years from 1971 until her retirement in 1997. She had many fond memories of her time with the friends she made there.

Jerry enjoyed spending time with her family. Her grandchildren brought her great pleasure; she was so proud of them.

Besides her parents and husband, Jerry, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Roy Mann and Lawrence Mann.

She is survived by one daughter, Cindy Hayter and husband, Gary, of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, eight grandchildren, Lora Turnage and husband, Dwane, of Kansas City, Missouri, Allison Asbill and husband, Jordan, of Bixby, Oklahoma, Tracey Silva and husband, Andy, of Dundee, Florida, and Amanda Ashcraft and husband, Blake, of Fort Collins, Colorado, nine great-grandchildren, Griffin, Kate, Caiden, Brenden, Isabella, Alayna, Ezekiel, William, and Jacob, one brother, Don and wife, Becky, one sister, Dorothy, and many nieces and nephews who will miss her greatly.
