James 'Jim' Daniel Sinning

“The Flying Bull,” James “Jim” Daniel Sinning, the tenth child of fifteen born to Gustave W. and Della (McCaskey) Sinning, was born on December 22, 1927 in a little white house on a country road, two and one half miles from Mtn. Grove, Missouri. He departed this life on September 16, 2013 in the Kabul Nursing Home in Cabool, Missouri, following an extended illness, at 85 years of age.
At the age of eighteen months, Jim’s family moved from Missouri to north of Guymon, Oklahoma. During the dust bowl in Oklahoma, the family would travel in a Model A to Missouri to live.
As a boy, Jim played marbles, baseball, listened to the radio, and rode his horse. He also enjoyed his two wheel buggy. Throughout his life, Jim kept a keen eye out looking for arrowheads.
As he grew older, Jim worked hard on area farms and ranches. One of his first jobs was building a barn and a house. As a young man he played minor league baseball with Mickey Mantle.
He later became a ranch foreman and a “bronco buster.”
Jim served his country in the United States Army and was honorably discharged on February 23, 1956 as a Private. He often told stories about guarding the Panama Canal during his time of service.
Jim loved telling stories of his many adventures during his life, including surviving the dust bowl in Oklahoma and how life was before and after this event.
Jim was united in marriage to Edith Mae Bradshaw on April 28, 1956 in Hernandez, Mississippi. Two children were born to this union, Debbra and Doug.
They were married for fifty-six years. Edith passed away suddenly on August 16, 2012.
Jim and Edith bought a farm near Mtn. Grove, where he raised a nice herd of cows. Jim enjoyed his farm life and he also worked as an AI Breeder for over sixty years. Later in life, Jim received the nickname, “The Flying Bull,” from his friends as he drove the roads quickly, rushing from one call to another doing his AI service and tending to the cattle.
He enjoyed being outdoors, especially when taking walks in the woods: looking for animal signs, finding mushrooms, and picking polk and wild blackberries.
Jim even roped a bobcat, just to show his granddaughters the big cat. He also tried to rope an Emu, but it kept ducking its head, what a funny sight.
Jim also loved joking around with his friends and family. He liked cutting the shirttails of his friends if they missed the animal they were hunting.
He loved fishing, raising pigs, hunting, gardening, planting trees, stocking his fish ponds, baling thick hay, eating coconut cream pie, eating strawberry ice cream, and anyone who knew James D. Sinning would say, “he loved cows, cows, and more cows.” He had many adventures in life and lived every day to the fullest.
Besides his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by six brothers: Elmer Louis, Earl William, Elvin Dean, Francis Alva, Robert Eugene, and an infant brother, Albert; and by four sisters: Ella Lee, Edith Pearl, Eunice Mae, and Charlene Joyce.
He is survived by his son: Doug Sinning and Victor Zeno, of Oviedo, Florida; his daughter and son-in-law: Debbra and Jerry Buchholz, of Mtn. Grove; three grandchildren: Larissa Buchholz and fiancé, Matt Faulkner, of Atlantic Beach, Florida, Katrina Selsor and her husband, Derek, of St. Louis, Missouri, and Kayla Hancock and her husband, Aaron, of Sahuarita, Arizona; one great-grandchild: Rosalin Hancock and a soon-to-be great-grandchild, baby Hancock; two brothers: Floyd Roy Sinning of Oklahoma and Ernest “Joe” Loring Sinning and his wife, Gale, of Ohio; Darlene Nelda Ditto of Indiana,, and Beatrice Jean Schmitt and her husband, Bud, of South Carolina; and a host of other relatives, neighbors, and friends, who will miss him very much.
