Joanne Marie (Del Carlo) Wood

March 22, 1938 — January 16, 2013

The heavenly angel choir welcomed a new member, January 16, 2013, when Joanne (Del Carlo) Wood arrived. The harmonies she will sing there will be a wonderful addition to their music!
Joanne was born to Levio “Nick” and Josephine (Antognoli) Del Carlo, a very industrious, hardworking young Italian couple on March 22, 1938. She was raised in Sanger, California, along with her younger sister, Jean, and attended school there. A beautiful popular young girl, she adorned Sanger Chamber of Commerce floats in numerous parades during her high school years. She was the Del Ray queen for the city’s annual fair, the summer of 1953. Like her parents, Joanne was always proud of her Italian heritage. In later years, she had the opportunity to travel to Italy with her father and oldest daughter and meet family there.
She married Russell Wood on December 26, 1955. They became the parents of three daughters, Ruscell, Leslie and Shelley. They lived most of their married life in the Cabool area, where Russell taught school and oversaw the Wood family cattle ranching business. Joanne was a great support to the family and the business, feeding many a hay hand and participating in many of her kid’s activities. She loved being a mom to her girls and later in life, a grandmother. She was a great cook, like her mother, and a friend to many. She provided babysitting and also fixed hair in her home for several clients. She also served as an adult 4-H leader. When the girls were older, she began working at the Cabool Enterprise, the local newspaper, which she owned with Russell for twenty-one years. Joanne took over for her mother-in-law to continue the local news column known as “Random Riting.” She was a good writer and always had a sense of humor and a beautiful smile, not knowing a stranger.
Joanne was very social. She was a longtime member of the Better Homemaker’s Club, played softball until she was forty, enjoyed her “knitting club” with their penny bets and the JOY Club dinner gatherings.
She is survived and will be greatly missed by her daughters and their families: Ruscell and Dave Pavlin and children, Kyle and Erin Pavlin of Springfield, Missouri; Leslie and Michael Swanson and their children, Eric and Sarah of The Colony, Texas; Shelley and Mark Adams of Cabool, Missouri, and children, Casey Barr of Springfield, Missouri, and Janelle (and Colin) Bassett and great-granddaughter, Edith Larue Wood Bassett of St. Louis, Missouri; Joanne also leaves her only sibling and devoted sister: Jean Lane of Fresno, California; sisters-in-law: Joyce Jones and Janice Lowe; and a brother-in-law: Johnny Wood, all of Cabool, Missouri; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
The family is very appreciative of Lois Speake and Hospice Compassus, for their care and dedication the last two years of her life.
