Wayne Russell Campbell

July 27, 1927 — October 10, 2010

“But let it be the hidden man of the heart in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit which is in the sight of God, of great price.” - 1Peter 3:4

Wayne Russell Campbell, son of Fred and Lettie (Strunk) Campbell, was born on July 27, 1927 in Douglas County Missouri, and went to be with the Lord on October 10, 2010 from his home in Mountain Grove after a long illness. He was 83 years, 2 months and 13 days of age. He grew up living on his parent’s farm in Douglas County, attended Norwood school and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War time. He returned home and remained on the family farm until he married Carol Campbell-Messerer in 1972. They made their home in Texas and Wright Counties for many years, and he later retired from the Missouri State Fruit Experiment Station in 2002. Wayne attended the Mountain Grove Full Gospel Church and loved the Lord Jesus Christ as his savior.

Wayne loved being outdoors and watching the weather, visiting with family, neighbors and friends, gardening, eating popcorn and watching baseball, and bluegrass music among many other things. He always loved hanging out in the garden shed and tinkering with garden tools, petting the dogs, and tidying up around the yard. You would always find his barns and sheds in order and he knew where everything was. He was always there to lend a hand and quiet support when there was need. Wayne was a kind and compassionate person with a gentle spirit who preferred to listen, rather that to be at the head of the conversation. He once said, “You can sure learn a lot about people when you just sit and listen to them.” He always chose his words carefully with much thought and you would be hard pressed to find him saying a derogatory word about anyone. When engaging in humorous conversation, his smile and laughter was as unique as his personality. He seemed to know just about everyone in this area, having lived here all of his life. For many years before he met Carol, Wayne was a school bus driver in Mountain Grove and drove the Panther sports teams of the 60’s and early 70’s to away games in the surrounding towns. If you sat down to have conversation with him, you would hear stories of the happenings of this area over the course of his life, many of them humorous and all of them very fascinating. Sadly, those great stories of our past are all too quickly fading away with the passing of a generation.

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, and is survived by his wife Carol of the home in Mountain Grove, four children: two daughters, Loretta Holden and husband Gary of Cabool, Tammy Sue Allsman and husband Kevin, and two sons, Tim Messerer and wife Kitty, and Lane Messerer and wife Tammy all of Mountain Grove. Wayne has six grandchildren: Selena, Tanya, Shawsha, Seath, Kahley, and Ariel and three great-grandchildren: Sheridan, Shayla, and Jaden and many other relatives and friends. Until that blessed day when we are all called home into the portals of glory, we will love him and greatly miss him.

When Jesus hung on the cross that day at Calvary and said “It is finished”, he had our names on his lips. When he delivered the beatitude: “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth,” surely Wayne Campbell was on his mind.
