William "Dwight" Bookout, 83, passed from this world on July 10, 2026, at Cox South Hospital in Springfield, Missouri, after spending his final morning doing what he had loved doing most in recent years — mowing the yard.
Dwight was born on December 16, 1942, in Wright County, Missouri, to Bill and Katherine Bookout. He was raised on the family farm south of Seymour alongside his older brother, J.W., and younger brother, Jerry.
On June 1, 1963, Dwight married the love of his life, Juanita June Bass. Together they built a life and a home in Seymour, where they raised their three children and shared more than six decades of marriage, family, laughter, and unwavering devotion.
A hardworking man through and through, Dwight attended barber school in Kansas City and spent many years serving the community as a local barber. Over the years, he also worked as Parts Manager for the local Chevrolet dealership and as an employee at Dayco and General Electric. No matter the job, Dwight brought the same steady work ethic and pride in doing things right.
Some of Dwight's favorite memories were made hunting deer and squirrels with his father and sons along the Glade Top Trail. He enjoyed drinking coffee and solving the world's problems with the other old guys at the Rusty Spur, and one of his greatest pleasures was taking June out for a meal together. He was also known for grilling a steak every bit as good as — and often better than — any steakhouse could serve.
But if there was one thing Dwight truly cherished, it was his yard. It wasn't just grass to him; it was a labor of love, a source of pride, and a reflection of the man himself. And if you wanted to get yourself in trouble, all you had to do was toss a cigarette butt into it.
He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant sister, Katherine Eileen, infant brother, James Wilbur, as well as another infant sibling, and one infant grandchild.
Dwight is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, June; his daughter, Kimberly Shook and husband, Tom; his sons, Chris Bookout, and Matt Bookout and wife, Laura; six granddaughters, Samantha, Deanna, Joni, Abigail, Emma, and Zaylee; six grandsons, Joshua, James, Shawn, Nathan, Douglas, and Dakota; nine great-grandchildren; his brothers, J.W. and Jerry; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
While our hearts ache in his absence, we find comfort in the memories he gave us, the lessons he taught us, and the love he leaves behind. We will miss him greatly, but we are certain this is not goodbye forever.
Somewhere beyond our sight, there is surely a perfectly striped lawn, a hot cup of coffee waiting with old friends, and a steak on the grill done exactly the way Dwight liked it.
Until we meet again.
