James Freeman

July 1, 1962 — March 18, 2024

Mountain Grove

James Dean Freeman, affectionately known as “Donk”, was born the son of the late James Columbus “JC” and Judy Marie (Hines) Freeman, on July 1, 1962, in Houston, Missouri. He departed this earth on March 18, 2024, in Kansas City, Missouri, at the age of 61.

As a child James and his family resided in Vanzant. He was raised in a large family and attended Mountain Grove Schools. Then, as an adult, he served his community in a remarkable 28 year career with the city of Mountain Grove, taking on various roles that reflected his deep commitment to helping others. From working in the street department to serving with pride in the Mountain Grove Police Department and even bravely fighting fires, James dedicated his life to ensuring the safety and well-being of those around him. His impact extended beyond his professional duties also serving as a school bus driver for 23 years, further ingraining himself in the fabric of the community he so dearly loved. In October of 2013, James retired from his life of service, leaving behind a remarkable lasting imprint on the community.

Along with the many accomplishments in his career, James was also known for his joyful spirit and sense of humor. He possessed a genuine love for life and brought laughter wherever he went. Fondly remembered as a fun-loving jokester with a stubborn streak, James had a special knack for brightening the lives of those around him. His respect for women was unwavering, and his kindness was felt by all who knew him. James met and married his best friend DeDee on February 14, 2014. When he married DeDee he became a wonderful father to her three sons. James also had two daughters that he loved dearly. One of James' proudest accomplishments was teaching his step-sons, Austin, Justin, and Cody, how to fish.

Away from work, James enjoyed hobbies such as fishing, kayaking, hunting, camping, and motorcycle rides with his beloved wife, DeDee. He cherished moments spent outdoors and cooking delicious meals for his family and friends. His favorite spot to get-away as a child was a cliff next to the water. He loved to take his guitar and go there. One day he enjoyed it too much. It rained hard, washed his guitar away and his sisters had to retrieve it.

Besides his parents, James was preceded in death by one sister, Tracy; and his grandparents, James and Verna Freeman and James and Agnes Hines.

James is survived by his wife, DeDee Freeman; step-sons, Justin, Austin, and Cody Moore; daughters, Brittany and Candace Freeman; seven grandchildren; sisters, Tamara (Dennis) Snyder, Terrena Freeman; brother, Michael Freeman; step-mother, Verla (Freeman) Nickell; step-sisters, Malisha Menefee and Wendy Davis; as well as several nieces and nephews.

The memories shared with James will forever hold a special place in the hearts of all who knew him. James had faith in his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and he had stated, “I’m ready to see Jesus.” Today he flies high with the angels of God. Until we meet again, “Donkey out.”
