Robert A. Barnhill Jr.

Robert Arvid Barnhill Jr., son of the late Robert Arvid Sr. and Lyne (Hale) Barnhill, was born February 2, 1950, in Hope Mills, North Carolina. He passed away suddenly on July 21, 2026, in Springfield, Missouri, at the age of 76.

Robert, affectionately known as “Bob” to many, and “Butch” to his siblings and family, grew up in the small town of Dublin, Maryland. He attended North Harford High School in Harford County, Maryland, graduating in 1968. Shortly after graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army, where he became an Airborne Ranger and Special Forces Green Beret, specializing in field ordnance and explosive demolition. Following injuries sustained during his service, Robert left the military.

After his military career, Robert briefly worked in construction alongside his brother, Bill, in Memphis, Tennessee. He later began a 30-year career with FedEx, where he worked his way into a management position. In his later years, Robert entered the trucking profession, driving large tankers cross-country. Throughout his working life, Robert was driven by one of his greatest priorities: providing for and supporting the family he loved so dearly.

Above all, Robert’s greatest passion was his family. He cherished the time he spent with those he loved and took great pride in his family. He also enjoyed fishing whenever he had the opportunity, as well as antiquing and restoring antiques.

Besides his parents, Robert was preceded in death his sister, Jackie Hoover; and brother-in-law, Martin Hoover.

Robert is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Tammy Barnhill; his children, Jacob Barnhill, Brian Dennis and wife, Jennifer, and Morgan Clanton and husband, Jayce; his grandchildren, Brendan Dennis, Avrid Clanton, and Evander Clanton; his siblings, Wendy Dawn Hill and her son, Michael Hill, Thomas Barnhill and wife, Pieper “Dee Dee”, and their children, Stacey McCue and husband, Ed, and Justin Barnhill and wife, Kristy, Robin Wiles and husband, Lenny, and his youngest brother, Wm. “Bill” Barnhill and wife, Mary. Robert leaves behind many beloved nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews who were all a cherished part of his extended family.

Robert had a deeply personal relationship with Jesus Christ, his Lord and Savior. His faith was an important part of who he was and the life he lived.

Robert will be remembered for his dedication to his family, his strength and determination, his service to his country, and the love he had for those closest to him. He leaves behind a family who will carry his memory and the impact of his life in their hearts for years to come.
