Roland honorably served his country in the United States Navy, before receiving his discharge into the reserves in 1959.

Prior to retirement Roland owned a dairy farm, and for 25 years he loved and worked that farm alongside his family. He also made missions work and drilled wells. He traveled to many places throughout his mission work, and he would travel to drill wells in rural villages, so the village people would have access to water. His mission work took him all over the country and the world, from, Haiti to, Africa, and even to Ethiopia.

Roland enjoyed spending time with family and friends in many forms. He was a man with a huge heart and a gift for changing lives. He devoted a lot of time mentoring and encouraging others.
