Shirley Ann (Guerin) Johnson was born on November 3, 1936, in Murray, Kentucky, to Eugene and Muncie Guerin. She departed this life on June 25, 2025, at Autumn Oaks in Mountain Grove, Missouri, at the age of 88.
A proud graduate of Murray High School, Class of 1955, Shirley was known for her spirit, leadership, and talent as the marching band major. Her love for music and education carried her through two years at Murray State University before she transferred to Georgetown Baptist College in Eastern Kentucky. After earning her degree in 1959, she began her teaching career in Palm Springs, California, where she taught high school English.
Recognized as a Carnegie academic scholar, Shirley pursued her master's degree at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, with the support of a prestigious Fulbright Scholarship. Her studies included enriching experiences abroad in Europe (1960) and Russia (1961). She continued her academic journey as a doctoral student at Baylor University in Waco, Texas.
On June 16, 1962, Shirley married Don Johnson in Kirkwood, Missouri. From their union came one son, Jay Don, who brought immense joy to their lives. Shirley’s creativity and passion for the arts left a lasting impression on everyone she met. A gifted musician and storyteller, she entertained crowds at Silver Dollar City and around the world for many years with her dulcimer and folk band, Shirley Goodness & Mercy. She was also a successful Missouri business owner, crafting whimsical historical dolls out of wooden spoons—lovingly named Spoonies.
Shirley had a vibrant personality and a unique ability to bring joy and warmth to every room she entered. Her life was a beautiful blend of intellect, artistry, humor, and compassion.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Eugene and Muncie Guerin; her brother, Gene Guerin; and her beloved son, Jay Don Johnson. She is survived by her devoted husband of 62 years, Don Johnson; her daughter-in-law, Bonnie Johnson; two cherished grandchildren, Kap (Lindsey) Johnson and Bellanne Johnson; and one precious great-granddaughter, Paisley Johnson.
Shirley will be laid to rest at Georges Creek Cemetery in Yellville, Arkansas.
