Shirley Ann Wilkie

March 8, 1940 — March 23, 2026

Mansfield, Missouri

Shirley Wilkie passed away peacefully at her home in Mansfield, Missouri, surrounded by the comfort of her beloved pets and with family by her side.

Shirley lived a full and independent life, shaped by both her strength and her deep care for others. She was a nurse by calling, spending years caring for people in San Luis Obispo and Fresno, California. It was in San Luis Obispo that she met Vernon, the love of her life—a meeting that would shape the rest of her story.

Together, they built a life rooted in shared purpose and adventure. Shirley later became an Air Life nurse out of Greeley, Colorado, continuing her work in some of the most critical moments of people’s lives. Eventually, she and Vernon made their way to Alaska, where she worked at the Alaska Native Hospital in Anchorage while he served in the medical corps at Elmendorf Air Force Base.

Those years were filled with meaning and partnership, and a shared love of the outdoors. They spent their time fly fishing, exploring, and simply being together—moments that remain among the most cherished.

After Vernon’s passing, Shirley moved to Mansfield, Missouri, where she and her daughter, Sarah, opened a beloved bookstore, A New Chapter—a place that continues to bring joy and connection to the community.

Shirley was intelligent, thoughtful, and unapologetically strong-willed. She lived life on her own terms, steady in who she was and how she chose to move through the world.

She will be deeply missed by her family and all who knew her, but her presence is not something that simply fades. It lives on in the lives she touched, the care she gave, and the quiet strength she carried. We take comfort in believing that the soul continues on and even returns—that this is not an end, but a transition. Because love, in all its forms, never truly leaves us.
